Use piCorePlayer to "upgrade" Boom with standalone capability

Had a crazy idea the other night. As part of my Squeeze ecosystem I have a Boom, which works great around the house (elthough given that I now have an SB in every room it's sort of redundant). Posting this in the Unix section as it's mostly a software query.

So what I was thinking was this:

Is it possible to fit a Pi Zero W (probably the 2W would be better for this) inside the Boom with a large (256GB or bigger) memory card? Firstly is there enough space to physically fit it (and a 5V regulator) inside the case?

Secondly, having done this, can piCorePlayer be configured to firstly attempt to connect to an access point at boot time, but then if the default access point is not available it can launch into AP mode (which would require launching DHCPD and mDNSd at least)? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that wifi_supplicant can be configured in this way.

The Boom would then be configured to connect to the squeezeserver / LMS instance running on the Pi, which could of course have the "remote music libraries" plug-in installed. The master media server could then rsync the entire MP3 directory to the Pi whenever it was connected, so then if you were to take the Boom elsewhere all the music would be available and synchronised.

I suspect also for this to work properly the Pi would need an RTC shim installing, but this is fairly trivial.

Thoughts and suggestions anyone?
