Massive dropouts after upgrading Ubuntu Server 12.04 > 14.04

I recently upgraded my music server from Ubuntu Server 12.04 to 14.04. This is the ONLY change made to my setup.

It used to run flawlessly, perfect in every way, but now I'm getting massive dropouts.

When worst playing 24/96-material plays intervals with 3 seconds music and 6 seconds pauses. Standard 16/44 mostly plays okay, but dropouts do occur often enough to disturb listning. MP3 plays just fine. Also, UI seems noticeably slower on both webclient and smartphone since upgrading.

This makes me think the server can't keep up with the needed buffer flow, but when looking at "top", only 0.7-2.7% CPU is used on a dualcore intel atom playing 24/96 with 9% memory usage (4GB available), so there should be plenty of resources. The server is dedicated to running LMS. I've even bumped LMS server priority to -20, no difference.

Inspired by other posts I've upgraded to LMS 7.8, now even 7.9.1 - both runs just fine, but the dropouts continue.

I'm running out of ideas on how to troubleshoot, so any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
